What do you think? Are there any other ways we could help new matches get to know each other faster?

Last year, I was interviewed for the position of Product Designer at Muzz, to help design a new feature for the company’s flagship product. The feature was set to be designed to help new matches get to know each other faster.

Muzz is a dating app for muslim folks looking to meet each other, it has over 6 million active users and growing, as a product designer I was looking forward to the opportunity to design a feature that could be utilized by millions of users and possibly lead to employment at Muzz.

Users are not engaging in a conversation after they match.

Making the first move with a new match can be daunting - Do you say hello? Open with a joke? Ask about the weather? These decisions can be overwhelming.

These uncertainties can cause undue stress for users and may contribute to decreased engagement following successful matches.

Now I myself, don't particularly engage or use these dating apps but I would know from live experience that the initial conversation starter can always be daunting, this was going to be a challenge.

As this challenge was on a timeframe I knew I had to be as effective as possible, so I started by analyzing the current solution that Muzz had implemented for this problem and see where and what I can improve. Downloaded the app and upon first glance I didn't like it, I also didn't like the experience that much. The typography choice was not the best and the overall visual language left you hanging.

And the current solution? Not great either. Basically what the Muzz team implemented was a "Say hi" button after you would match with someone but the feature was not implemented correctly as it was confusing to say the least.

From the research I gathered, which was very hard to conduct because of how hard was to find a match to try out the features that these apps had. In the sea of dating apps, I picked two apps that had a lot of downlaods and were the most prominent in the dating app scene. These apps had features that were aimed to help users start a conversation after making a match.

As I examined the feature, I jotted down my thoughts on what I liked and disliked about it. My conclusion? The feature had potential, but it still needed some fine-tuning before it could be applied to Muzz.

After much contemplation and research, I was able to create a visual map that helped me simplify the process. It's understandable that there is not a one size fits all when designing a feature for a large set of users, especially on a dating app in which people are looking for different things in their life.

My main goal was to try alleviate the stress and anxiety often associated with impressing a match by making the experience more approachable and user-friendly.

I then started iterating and wireframing a few ideas I had in mind of how the feature should work and look. After a bunch of concepts I decided on a particular concept and started testing it with my friends and family to see if it would achieve the desired outcome.

After a few rounds of testing and tweaking, I had a design that I was happy with. The concept I designed was based on the idea of a conversation starter, where the app would offer users a selection of conversation starters to send to their match after they had been matched.

Designing the feature

After three days of research and exploration, ideation, I began to land on an initial design for the feature of the product.

I would start with "Icebreaker” anyone could use one after they got a match, the first screen would have an input field where users could select from a list of “Icebreakers” that we provided. This list would be curated by our team and would be updated regularly.

The solution was taking shape as I incorporated the brand colors, typography and icons into a presentable high-fidelity design, which then I would share with the Muzz team.

CONS

  1. Accessibility and localisation concerns about the final solution - the layout doesn't seem as scalable as we would need it to be, particularly in RU etc.
